Reading through the New Testament in 2012 M-F (Link to the Schedule)
Matthew13:52 He said to them, “Therefore every teacher of the law who has been instructed about the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old.”
When I was in early elementary school there would occasionally be a school holiday and I would be watched for the day by my grandparents and Aunt who lived with them. My dad was a late in life baby, as I was, so my grandparents were close to 80 at the time.
They were born in the 1880s so they had seen the world radically change and since they had been through the Great Depression they had a bit of hoarder in them. My Aunt living with them was my Grandma's younger sister in her 70s that helped with the cooking and driving. Willie was her name, but we all called her Aunt Bill. I loved my Aunt Bill, she taught me to whittle, play old school dominoes and told great stories of a world long ago, and long gone.
Invariably, while spending the day with them, Aunt Bill would disappear into the junk room in the back of the house or into the garage and after a bit of rummaging around in their hoarded collection of stuff would produce something cool that I had never seen before. She was a great story teller and would have a tale about the item that connected me with it. The story of that item became part of my story.
What others would probably consider old junk my Aunt turned into a wonderful new treasure. It was something unique that none of my friends would ever have, it was precious to me, and it was life enriching.
One time it was my Dad's military patches, belt and hats, and she told me about him going off into the Army Air Corps and how proud they were if him. My pride in my dad increased.
Another time it was a Liberty silver dollar that had been through a house fire that melted away half the image but the date 1922 was clear. That was the year of my Dad's birth and she would tell me some story from my Dad's childhood. I have never forgotten my Dad's birth year since.
This is, in a sense, what Jesus describes in this passage. As we understand the Big Picture-Kingdom of God story of what He has done through history and His Son, and bring it into the present story of others we are bringing out of our storerooms special treasures of truth that bless the world.
Let 's fill the storeroom of our minds with God's rich story from both the Old Testament and the New.
